Rodrigo Y Gabriela are finger-plucking fairytale

From busking in Dublin to world domination: the story of Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo and Gabriela has been a finger-plucking fairytale. Here they are again with another sold-out show, this one coinciding with the release of their long-awaited second album, 11.11, a diverse and adventurous effort of which they are clearly proud.
“We recorded this at home in f***ing Mexico,” says Gabriela Quintero, still the most demure looking metalhead around. “It was f***ing hot and we were f***king stressing. We hope you like it.”
What isn’t there to like about this talented twosome? Seated on chairs either side of the stage, a set list taped on the floor between them, they launch straight into the sort of lightning-fast virtuosity for which they’re famous.
Newly moustachioed Rodrigo Sanchez hunches over his instrument, reeling up and down the frets as Gabriela strums and drums her guitar in a blur of complementary rhythms. Rock, flamenco, jazz, metal and folk all make their presence felt; new material includes odes to Jimi Hendrix, Paco de Lucia and — why not? — metal stylist Dimebag Darrell.
A packed crowd cheer, clap and yell “Hey!” when Rodrigo insists. Gabriela smiles, her eyes shut, her fingers speeding instinctively.
