Beyoncé is in a pop league of her own

Beyoncé encompasses everything you would hope for in an outstanding female solo artist. She is hard-working, polished and professional (not to mention fabulously talented).
From the moment the spotlight lit up ‘Sasha Fierce’ on the 02 Arena* stage she gave it her all. This was a woman in her pop prime. She has reached a stage in her career where she is confident with her ability as one of the music industry’s biggest stars and thoroughly lives up to expectations.
Clips of President Obama doing the Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) hand gesture and a rendition of Etta James’s At Last, which she performed at Obama’s inauguration ceremony, were reminders of the phenomenon that this 28-year-old has become.
A two hour set flew by with the help of glamorous costume changes and dazzling stage effects. Although the latter were great for spectacle Ms Knowles’s vocals and moves were impressive enough to carry their own weight.
Her performance of Smash Into You taken from latest album I Am…Sasha Firece was a number to be reckoned with. Listen, her single from film Dream Girls, also showcased her incredible vocals.
Husband Jay-Z and friend Kanye West popped on stage to perform their Beyoncé duets. Why not eh? But no one was going to outshine this star.
Some people have just got ‘it’, others work at ‘it’. Beyoncé does both and this puts her in a different league from most of her contemporaries. Here is a woman who really has got the X Factor.
So good I am concerned no other concert will live up to it for a while.
*The audience was made up of competition winners with every seat in the house being given away by Trident. Winners took part in a giant game of musical chairs, donated money to Beyoncé buskers and Children in Need, sang a Beyoncé song for a lucky ticket and chewed their way to O2 by sending back Trident packs and entering competitions.
