£100m opera bid hits wrong note

Plans for a £100 million outpost of the Royal Opera House in the North West have been dealt a huge blow.

The Lowry Centre, one of Manchester's leading arts complexes, said the proposed venture would "destroy" it and be "bad for the city, bad for the arts and bad for the taxpayer".

There are fears the centre would lose touring companies to the new outpost and it has urged the Royal Opera House to scrap the plans. The Royal Opera House said it was disappointed with the "premature" criticism.

Ultimately the plans will depend on support from the Government.
