£130m Tate Modern extension redesigned

Designs for a £130 million extension to Tate Modern are being revised.

Changes being discussed include the introduction of layers of sloping brickwork, rather than glass, to the exterior, according to Building magazine.

Planning permission was granted to Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron last May but if major alterations are made a new application would be required.

A Tate spokeswoman said: "The project team is in the detailed design phase of the project, refining the designs."

She said images of the new look would be available in the autumn.

The project has been promised £ 50million by the Government and £7million by the London Development Agency. A further £10 million has been raised from other donors.

The extension, nicknamed Tate 2, is planned to add around 230,400 sq ft of space across 11 floors and increase the size of the gallery by 60 per cent. It is unclear whether the changes will involve making the extension smaller, although sources said this was a possibility.

The project is due for completion in 2011 but could be delayed by any new planning application or problems in raising the remaining £63 million.
