Luke James Sharp molested Rosemary Pagett, 75, for possibly as long as 30 minutes in her own home in Ryhill near Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
Leeds Crown Court was told the youngster had carried out the sex attack in an attempt to draw attention to his own unhappiness with his foster home.
The court was told he had considered other crimes, including a murder, but had opted to enter the home of Mrs Pagett in July this year where he sexually assaulted her.
Horrified neighbours found the pensioner in a distressed state with her dressing gown undone.
She developed breathing difficulties and was taken to hospital where she died 10 days later.
A forensic post-mortem revealed the cause of death as complications arising from a burst ulcer.
The court was told it would be "pure speculation" to link the burst ulcer and the sex attack, although Judge James Stewart, QC, said it was an "extraordinary coincidence."
Sharp, who was aged just 12 at the time of the incident, appeared at Leeds Crown Court for sentence.
