£150,000 for NHS spin team

The organisation that will bring polyclinics to the capital plans to spend up to £150,000 on a team of press officers.

NHS London today advertised four posts in its communications department. Healthcare campaigners criticised the move as a waste of money.

Some of the communications staff will work on health minister Lord Darzi's plan called Healthcare for London. Under the plans new "super specialist" centres will be built, which experts say will save thousands of lives. But doctors fear the introduction of polyclinics will be detrimentalto patients and force hospitals to shut. Geoff Martin of campaign group London Health Emergency said: "I think NHS London should be able to make their case without relying on a team of spin doctors." Steve Gladwin, spokesman for NHS London, said two of the four job adverts are to replace existing staff.
