£16 per case on Ryanair as fuel costs start to bite

The era of budget airlines and return flights for £10 could soon be at an end, analysts warned today.

Passengers travelling with budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet are finding themselves more and more out of pocket as they pay for the extra charges.

Soaring fuel costs have put these airlines under financial pressure, forcing them to increase ticket prices, fuel surcharges and luggage check-in fees.

Ryanair, Europe's largest budget carrier, yesterday raised the cost of putting bags in the hold and checking in at the airport instead of online.

From next Monday, passengers will have to pay £16 a bag and £8 to use a check-in desk on return journeys.

Ryanair said increasing charges on baggage would keep fares low by making airplanes lighter so less fuel is consumed and handling costs are lowered.

But analysts said rising fuel costs mean higher luggage check-in costs are inevitable because airlines need to increase charges to cover the cost of fuel.

Andrew Lobbenberg, an analyst at ABN Amro, said: "Their earnings are adversely affected by the fuel price, so they need to do everything they can to alleviate that cost pressure."

The charges increase came as Eos Airlines, which carried business passengers between London and New York, filed for bankruptcy this week.
