2,000 drivers join car-sharing club in a year

Up to 3,000 people have given up their cars in favour of a car-sharing club, figures show today.

Streetcar now has 3,000 members across Wandsworth, compared with 1,000 a year ago. Members book hire cars in advance and then pick them up from 55 on-street bays across the borough. They use them, on average, for five hours before returning them to the bay.

The scheme is run in association with Wandsworth council. Guy Senior, executive member for planning and transportation, said: "It's a simple way to cut motoring costs, reduce congestion and save on emissions.

"The success of the scheme means we are now looking at ways of providing more on-street bays. This is the key to bringing this form of car sharing within reach of many more drivers."
