2012 stunt a bridge too far for City staff

20 September 2007
A PR team attempted to close the Millennium Bridge at rush-hour and turn it into a sprint track to launch Adidas's commercial partnership of the 2012 Games.
But, crucially, the organisers failed to gain permission from the City of London to close the pedestrian bridge which links Tate Modern and St Paul's Cathedral to the north. As American world champion sprinters Tyson Gay and Allyson Felix took to their marks, angry pedestrians broke through a line of security guards on the north side of the bridge. The guards attempted to restrain the commuters who insisted they had right of way.
One commuter, Roger Crosskey, said: "It was crazy to do that at 10am when it's going to be so busy." A City of London Corporation spokesman said: "If people were inconvenienced then we apologise for that."
