22 baggage staff arrested at Stansted for raiding cases of iPods and jewellery

Baggage handlers have been arrested for stealing valuables from passengers' luggage at one of Britain's busiest airports.

A total of 22 workers were held in a police crackdown Stansted Airport targeting staff who raided bags and cases once they had been checked in.

Cameras, iPods, mobile phones, jewellery, and cigarettes have been among the valuables stolen in recent months.

The suspects were held as part of Operation Bruno which has been running for months at the Essex airport.

Det Sgt Vic Murphy, from Stansted Airport CID, confirmed 22 workers had been arrested and were being questioned about the thefts.

He said: "We do not know the true amount of theft from baggage because, unlike many other reported thefts, it is not always necessary to inform the police to claim on insurance."

Passengers usually complete a "world tracer form" for their airline, which is normally enough to support an insurance claim but the thefts are often unreported to the police.

Det Sgt Murphy said thieves usually took "pot luck" with which cases to open, but that some items could be felt through soft cases.
