38,000 sign up for London Freewheel

Organisers of the Hovis London Freewheel have been forced to put a freeze on entries.

The major cycling event, which will see key roads in central London closed to vehicles on Sunday, has about 38,000 people registered. It was meant to cater for 30,000.

The official website says it is "now at the planned capacity". Only experienced cyclists who are prepared to become volunteer helpers for the day can now sign up.

The route includes The Mall, Victoria Embankment, Parliament Square, Thames Street and London Bridge, which will be reserved exclusively for cyclists.

There will be a cycling festival in St James's Park, including BMX, mountain and trial bike stunts and cycling acrobatics.

Riders are encouraged to pedal in marshalled groups from one of six hubs in inner London.

A London Assembly Green Party spokesman said today: "It is a shame the route was not expanded but it is going to be a fantastic event and there is nothing to stop people who haven't signed up from cycling along - it is after all a public highway."

A spokesman for the Mayor's office said: "The fact that we have been oversubscribed for this event in its first year demonstrates that London can now justifiably call itself a cycling city.

"Record investment over the past six years in training and facilities through Transport for London, an expanding network of cycle and bus lanes and the confidence given to cyclists through tackling congestion in central London has seen cycling soar by 83 per cent since 2000 - more than any other city in Europe. We want the Hovis London Freewheel to encourage even more people to cycle regularly."
