500,000 cycle in the capital every day

More than half a million bike journeys are made in London every day, new figures reveal.

It represents a 91per cent increase in the number of cyclists since 2000 and a 30 per cent rise since August 2005.

The figures' release coincides with National Bike Week which runs until Sunday and includes "health" rides through Southwark and "Dr Bike" sessions across London so cyclists can get their bikes examined.

Mayor Boris Johnson also confirmed today that he would invest £55 million on improved bike parking, events and cycle promotion - a 10-fold increase on the £5.5 million spent in 2000.
