6 Music won award on day BBC swung the axe

BBC bosses gave its radio station 6 Music an award for "excellence" on the same day it announced the service was to be axed, the Standard can reveal.

The award - for best technical execution of an event - was handed out at a ceremony at BBC headquarters in White City just hours after BBC director general Mark Thompson announced 6 Music and the Asian Network were to face closure.

There has been a huge public outcry over the decision, with more than 100,000 people joining online campaigns, and stars such as David Bowie and Lily Allen appealing for the station to be saved. News of its accolade will put even more pressure on the BBC Trust to reverse the decision.

At the annual in-house Audio and Music awards ceremony on Tuesday, BBC 6 Music was honoured for its "excellent" coverage of last year's Camden Crawl festival.

A BBC insider said: "It was so ironic everyone knows the station is successful and popular. The cuts are just about money."

It is feared up to 600 jobs could go if the recommendations to close the stations, downsize the website and shut BBC Switch and Blast! are accepted.

David Bowie said: "For new artists to lose this station would be a great shame." Lily Allen said the BBC was going through a "dire phase". She added: "You can't help but feel that they are scared of taking risks."
