645-home project at old hospital site is given the go-ahead

A huge development of flats and houses is to be built on the site of a former hospital.

Planning permission has been granted for 645 homes - half affordable and earmarked for key and low-paid workers - as well as leisure facilities, a square and business space.

The £250 million development, on the site of the former Greenwich District Hospital, will be environmentally-friendly with technology such as on-site generation of heat and power.

The Heart of East Greenwich, by First Base, contains homes designed by Make Architects, Arup and Lovejoy. It will comprise one, two and three-bedroom flats, maisonettes and four-bedroom houses.

The development will also contain two doctors' surgeries, a library, creche, shops and cafés.

Elliot Lipton, of First Base, said: "This signals the start of a new wave of green building in the capital."

The key-worker housing will be delivered under English Partnerships' London-Wide Initiative, which is a five-year programme to provide 4,500 homes at 15 sites across the capital.

No start or finish date for the development has been set.
