£6m offered in compensation but 143 claims still not settled

More than 140 compensation claims made by victims of the 7/7 bombings have still to be settled.

Figures from the Ministry of Justice show 635 applications have been received from people either bereaved or injured and nearly £6million in compensation has been offered.

Of the claimants, 492 have agreed a compensation figure and a further 42 have received offers but have yet to say whether they are satisfied with the amount.

The cases of another 101 have still to be concluded, of whom 99 have still to receive any compensation. In 78 of these cases, some of which relate to claims submitted relatively recently, delays have been caused by the need to obtain more evidence about the victim's circumstances, such as medical evidence about the long-term costs of injuries. In a further 22 cases, the original decision by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority is being reviewed at the applicant's request and the one other case has gone to formal appeal.

Overall, a total of £5,085,319 has so far been paid out to 536 victims - in either final or part payment of their claim - and £5,984,641 has been offered. The deadline for applications for compensation expired in July, two years after the bombings.

The figures do not show when the claims that have still to be settled were made, although officials have insisted previously that only a handful of outstanding cases relate to applications made soon after the terror attacks.
