£7.6m lottery grant helps restore gardens at Chiswick House

The historic gardens surrounding Chiswick House in west London are to be restored with the help of a £7.6 million lottery grant.

The award means the trust which runs the property and 65-acre estate needs just £1 million to complete its £11.7 million restoration fund target.

Work on the project will begin in the spring. Miles of paths will be renewed, more than 1,600 trees planted and a new café and lavatories built. The conservatory, home to a rare camellia collection, will also be restored. Rupert Hambro, chairman of Chiswick House and Gardens Trust, said: "Chiswick House is one of the most glorious examples of neo-Palladian architecture, so it is highly appropriate that during Palladio's 500th anniversary the setting for this stunning house should be restored."

Carol Souter, director of the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: "Chiswick House and gardens are a hugely popular landmark which people rightly feel passionate about.

"This investment will help secure the future of this beautiful green space, giving many more visitors and volunteers the opportunity to enjoy it." The house and gardens receive around one million visitors a year.
