999 car in King's Road smash

This is the scene after a police car on a 999 call was involved in an accident in the King's Road.

Debris was sent flying 50 metres as police car and a Ford Mondeo being driven by a 60-year-old man were in collision.

The Mondeo was shunted off the road and ploughed through black, wrought-iron railings. The police BMW - which had its lights flashing and sirens blaring - was left stranded in the road outside the Bluebird restaurant. Police closed the road as teams worked to clear the wreckage, causing huge tailbacks.

A police spokesman said the car was responding to a 999 call and that there would be an investigation. Neither the two police officers nor the civilian were injured. Two weeks ago 18-year-old David King died when he was hit by a police car on a 999 call in Finchley.
