999 crash traps five firemen in wreckage

Five firefighters had to be cut free from their fire engine today when it crashed with a lorry on its way to a 999 call.

The lorry driver was being treated for serious head injuries after the crash in Tottenham.

The accident happened at 3am at the junction of High Road and Lansdowne Road as the fire crew were travelling from Tottenham fire station.

More fire crews were called to the scene, where they spent almost an hour using specialist equipment to cut the fire fighters and lorry driver free from the wreckage.

Paramedics treated the lorry driver at the scene before taking him to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

None of the firefighters was seriously injured. One is receiving hospital treatment for back injuries. The remaining four suffered cuts and bruises, whiplash and shock.
