Act now or lose oasis for wildlife
04 October 2007
Erith Marshes received a stay of execution last week when Asda abandoned plans to build on it.
Now conservationists say the area, home to some of the capital's rarest wildlife, should be protected permanently.
Species such as the water vole, skylark, grass snake, slow-worm and common toad live there. In winter, it provides feeding grounds for goldfinches and fieldfares. Today the London Wildlife Trust urged Bexley council to designate it public open space.
"While we recognise the Thames Gateway is a key area for regeneration, its development strategy must protect wildlife and green infrastructure," said Emily Brennan, director of the trust.
"We would be pleased to work with Bexley to identify the best means of safeguarding this site."
