Balancing personal finances and restructuring payments is also becoming harder for wealthy people as they are increasingly hit by the recession, according to a debt charity, the Consumer Credit Counselling Service.

It also found that people in the south of England have the highest levels of debt in the UK.

Malcolm Hurlston, chairman of the service, said: "External forces over which the credit industry has no control, including recession, unemployment, increases in the costs of everyday living and a falling housing market, are compounding the problem of debt. These trends seem likely to continue for the foreseeable future."
