After the warmest spring on record, now for a red-hot summer

Usually it is a gentle warm-up for the hotter months ahead.

This year, however, spring has fast forwarded straight into summer.

An unusually warm March followed by sizzling April sunshine helped make this the warmest spring since records began nearly 100 years ago.

Temperatures across Britain in March, April and May averaged 9c (48.2f) - beating the previous record set in spring 1945 by 0.2c, the Met Office said yesterday.

This year spring has fast forwarded straight into summer

As well as being warm, spring was up to four weeks early in some parts of Britain. Crocuses peeped through in late January, magnolias were blooming in February and wisteria was out in all its glory by April.

The early spring proved a blessing for insects with bee keepers reporting bumper numbers in their hives and record amounts of honey.

May, although still warm, was remarkably wet, with some areas drenched in twice their average rainfall.

The May Bank Holiday was a washout, with thousands cutting short the break to get home out of the downpours.

According to the Met Office, the last five years were the warmest since records began in 1914

Unseasonal seasons have been breaking records over the past few years.

Last autumn was the hottest since records began in 1914, as was last summer. According to the Met Office, the last five years were the warmest since records began.

"We are seeing new weather records every few months," said a spokesman for the Met Office. "Each month in spring was warmer than the long-term average but April was particularly hot.

"We had average temperatures of 10.2c - more than three degrees warmer than normal and close to the sort of temperature we normally get in May."

The warmest spring day was April 15, when temperatures soared to 26.5c (79.7f) in Sussex.

Forecasters say there is a "high probability" that the summer will be hotter than normal and that 2007 is likely to be another record breaker for Britain.
