Aggressive pets can be destroyed

The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 was introduced in response to public concern after a series of incidents where people, particularly children, were mauled by aggressive, uncontrolled dogs.

Under the Act, which was amended in 1997, it is illegal to breed dogs for fighting or to own specific types of dog, including the pit bull terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro.

Other dangerous dogs have to be muzzled and kept on a leash in public and neutered. Dogs which are deemed out of control or dangerous can be destroyed.
