Airport passengers taught to save lives

Air passengers will be given life-saving lessons while waiting for their flights at Heathrow.

Paramedics will teach the public how they can prevent a death if they see someone suffering a cardiac arrest.

They will be shown how to use a defibrillator, a machine that can deliver a shock to restart someone's heart when it stops beating properly.

The scheme, run by the London Ambulance Service, is the first of its kind to take place outside the United States.

There are 121 defibrillators at Heathrow and 580 BAA workers are already trained to use them.

London Ambulance Service community defibrillation officer Martin Bullock said: "In five minutes we can give people the basic knowledge to make a real difference in saving someone's life. Getting a defibrillator to someone in cardiac arrest as soon as possible will also greatly increase their chances of survival."
