Alert over return of the illegal rural rave

Town halls were warned yesterday to expect a revival of illegal rave parties in the countryside.

Raves, fuelled by hypnotic dance music and Ecstasy, boomed during the late 1980s and early 1990s but the craze faded away more than a decade ago.

Leaders of the Local Government Association, the umbrella body for councils, believe they are coming back into fashion.

Raves involve thousands of youngsters trespassing on rural sites. Land can be damaged and neighbours upset by the noise, while those who attend are at risk from drugs and alcohol.

Rave culture is coming back

Environmental health officers have been instructed to check the Internet for advance warning of unlicensed gatherings.

Landowners and villagers have been warned to look out for signs that large-scale parties are being organised, especially on holiday weekends.

A spokesman for the association said: 'The last couple of years have seen a rave revival, with "Nu Rave" music acts growing in popularity among mainstream audiences.

"Communication on the Internet also makes illegal raves easier and quicker to organise than in their heyday."
