All faiths must work together, Chief Rabbi tells bishops

Nearly all the problems in society are caused by a loss of faith, according to Britain's Chief Rabbi.

Sir Jonathan Sacks told Anglican bishops that societies without religion disintegrate and people succumb to depression, stress, eating disorders and drug and alcohol abuse.

He said people feel "alone" as society has lost its "graciousness."

"Relationships break down," he said. "Marriage grows weak. Families become fragile. Communities atrophy. The result is people feel vulnerable and alone."

Sir Jonathan was speaking to 650 bishops and their spouses as the first rabbi to address the Lambeth Conference.

He said current times were "one of the most fateful ages of change since homo sapiens first set foot on Earth," and that although global communication was bringing people closer, it was fragmenting groups "into ever smaller sects of the like-minded."

The conference in Canterbury is trying to find a way to prevent the fragmentation of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Sir Jonathan called for Christians to unite with members of other faiths to try to solve world problems.
