Anarchist group plan to disrupt police rally over pay row

A police march and mass rally over pay is at risk of being hijacked by anarchists planning a rival protest.

Supporters of Class War are being urged to demonstrate against the march, taking place in London on 23 January, being staged by officers angry over this year's pay deal.

As many as 15,000 officers are expected to march past the Home Office in the protest.

While police have staged a mass lobby of Parliament before, it is thought to be the first time they have marched through London since 1919.

Scotland Yard admits it will have to deploy riot police because of fears of violence by anarchists. Police said they had intelligence the group was planning a demonstration against the march. On some websites Class War is calling on "everyone who has ever had a bad experience of the police" - including miners involved in the 1984-85 strike - to gather in Whitehall to "make their views heard".

The Met said it was planning for 10,000 protestors as well as a possible confrontation between Class War protestors and police demonstrators.

Police are threatening a ballot for strike action after Home Secretary Jacqui Smith refused to backdate a 2.5 per cent pay offer, effectively reducing the award to 1.9 per cent.
