Walthamstow Stadium will be sold to developers after its owners could not halt falling profits. It will close in August after 75 years, leaving only two greyhound stadiums in London - Wimbledon and Romford.

Charles Chandler, whose family has owned the racecourse since it opened in 1933 said his business had become "unsustainable" after the rise of betting shops.

But animal rights activists, who have been picketing race nights at the stadium are celebrating.

Tony Peters of the Greyhound Action Group said: "We are absolutely delighted to hear the news."
