The Japanese company admitted it was investigating power-steering problems in Corollas in the US.

Toyota has not sold the model in Britain since 2007 and it is not clear how many are still on the road. A UK spokesman for the firm indicated there were no plans for a recall here.

The firm has already instigated the recall of eight million vehicles, including 800,000 in Britain, mainly over problems with the accelerator, braking and floor mats.

Toyota president Akio Toyoda said there had been fewer than 100 complaints about the Corolla. He denied the firm had tried to cover up the problems and said he would not attend next week's US Congressional hearing on his company's handling of the issue.

Toyoda said he would be travelling to America but explained: "I trust that our officials in the US will amply answer the questions."

He added there have been fewer than 100 complaints about the Corolla.

Toyota UK said its dealers are working flat out, including weekends, to carrying out recalls.
