Archbishop: New fertility law will help Fathers 4 Justice

Plans to deny fathers a say in whether a woman has fertility treatment will strengthen groups such as Fathers 4 Justice, the Archbishop of York said today.

Dr John Sentamu said the proposals in the Human Tissue and Embryology Bill were divorced from morality.

Under the Bill, fertility clinics would no longer need to consider the rights of the father when providing treatment. Lesbian couples would also be able to have treatment without having to involve fathers beyond the provision of sperm.

The Archbishop told the House of Lords: "Now we have a Bill in which the Government is set to remove - as a statement of public policy - the requirementfor the need of a father? How much stronger then might become the campaign of Justice for Fathers?"

Dr Sentamu said the Bill contradicted the Government's emphasis on the need for father figures to encourage "social cohesion". It was also rooted in a " consumerist mentality" whereby "the science that allows something to happen is transformed into the right to have it".

At least 45 MPs have signed a Commons motion saying the Bill is " profoundly" misinformed.
