Archbishop of Canterbury writes two prayers to remember a princess

They were what Princes William and Harry had wanted.

The Church of England has published two new prayers to mark the tenth anniversary of the death of their mother.

The prayers, written by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, will be used at Princess Diana's memorial service at the the Guards Chapel next week, when her two sons will be present.

The prayers have been published by the Church of England to mark ten years since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales

Congregations around the country will also be able to use them to express their own sorrow over Diana's death.

The prayers talk about the Princess's "vulnerability", her "willingness to reach out to the excluded" and her "tragic and untimely death".

The first prayer reads:

God our Father, we remember before you Diana, Princess of Wales, and offer you our gratitude

For all the memories of her that we treasure still.

Her vulnerability

And her willingness to reach out to the excluded and forgotten

Touched us all; her generosity gave hope and joy to many.

May she rest in peace where sorrow and pain are banished,

And may the everlasting light of your merciful love shine upon her;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The second reads:

Father eternal, unfailing source of peace to all who seek you,

We entrust to your love and protection

All for whom this anniversary of the tragic and untimely death of

Diana, Princess of Wales

Dr Rowan WIlliams has composed two prayers for the memorial service

Reawakens the pains of grief and loss.

Comfort all who mourn, that casting all their cares upon you,

They may be filled with your gifts - of new life, of courage and of hope;

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

It is ten years since Diana died in a car crash in a Paris underpass, along with Dodi Al Fayed, the son of Harrods' owner Mohamed Al Fayed, and their driver Henri Paul.

There have been lower key memorials to mark the Princess' death at the age of 36 but this year's service will be a more formal occasion.

Prince William and Prince Harry will attend as well as the Queen and Prince Philip, the Prince of Wales and members of Diana's family.

There has been some controversy about the presence of Charles' new wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, at the event.
