Brian Wall, 62, was convicted of shooting 26-year-old Adam Mapleson when he came to the aid of a female security guard during a robbery in Essex.
The IT technician suffered huge blood loss in the attack which happened at Rayleigh railway station in May 2007.
Mr Mapleson, who was on his way to work, saw the security guard delivering £20,000 to a cash point when she had a gun thrust into her stomach.
The 26-year-old stepped in to help her, but was shot at near point-blank range.
Wall's DNA recovered from a discarded baseball cap was found yards away from the burnt out car used in the robbery.
He was also trapped by forensic evidence from fingerprint experts, and identified by the security guard.
Wall, of Dagenham, was jailed yesterday for a minimum of 12 years after being found guilty of conspiracy to rob and conspiracy to possess firearms with intent to commit robberies following a 14-week trial at Chelmsford Crown Court.
Detective Superintendent Michael Field, of the British Transport Police, welcomed the sentence.
He said: "The sentence that has been handed down to Brian Wall is a clear reflection of the seriousness of the crimes he committed.
"He is a cynical, career criminal who was prepared to use firearms to ensure his demands were met.
"He will now spend a very long time in prison where he will be able to contemplate the consequences of his actions, in particular his shooting of a brave young man in cold blood."
Mr Mapleson was commended for his bravery by the judge and awarded a maximum £1,000 for his actions.
Det Supt Field added: "Adam's actions on that day were truly courageous. I would like to pay tribute to him for what he did and hope that the sentence handed to Brian Wall helps Adam, and also his family, gain some closure on what happened that day."
