Arrows point the way to easing Tube scrums

These strange designs may be the answer to persuading commuters crushed on a Tube platform to let passengers off the train before they push their way on board.

Underground bosses hope to control the daily scrum with a series of squares and arrows designed to encourage people to obey tannoy announcements and "allow passengers off the train".

A six-month trial, beginning today, will analyse passengers' reactions to the markings at Jubilee line stations including Green Park and Westminster. Similar systems are used successfully in Europe and Japan.

A TfL spokeswoman said: "If people obey the signs and stand behind the markings, then it could make life a lot easier.

"We are testing a range of different markings and after six months we will take a view on when, and if, we roll them out across all stations."
