Reporter tricks way on to runway

Heathrow Airport was at the centre of a new security row today after an undercover reporter went unchallenged for four weeks.

Armed with a hidden microphone and video camera, the man made his way on to the airport runway. He also discovered a British Airways security manual in an unlocked office, which included security plans and details of bomb threats.

He photocopied and returned it without anyone noticing that it

had been missing. He also

found more than 20 sets of keys to other offices. The breach comes after a string of safety blunders at the airport despite claims that security has been dramatically stepped up since September 11.

During the month-long investigation the reporter found a high visibility vest and a radio normally issued to cleaners. The vest allowed him to blend in with the cleaning staff and gave him access to secure areas.

On one evening he managed to walk on to the airport apron, where the planes stand, via the viewing gallery of the Queen's Building. The reporter, who has not been named but works for Sky News, said: "I was surprised at how easy it was to move in and out of the offices in Terminal One.

"Once I'd found the high-visibility vest, I was able to move around the airport unchallenged. This gave me time to 'recce' access points to other secured areas.

"I walked round Terminal One on a number of nights, always wearing the vest and never challenged by security guards. I was looking for a way to reach the apron.

"After a couple of evenings I found the route. Once in Terminal Two I made my way to the viewing gallery. From there I slipped through an open gate, across the roof and under razor wire to the roof of the departures building. From there a fire escape ladder led to the Tarmac. I was in and out in less than 20 minutes."

Heathrow airport said passenger safety and security were its top priorities but it could not comment on specific allegations as they had not yet seen the documentary.

But a spokeswoman said: "It would appear that there is room for improvement in this area of security and we are taking steps to address this."

In September 2002, a TV reporter smuggled an imitation pistol onto a flight at Heathrow, while in the same year police arrested a group of suspected illegal immigrants working at the airport.
