July 1997

Mortgage tax relief cut; pension taxed; health insurance tax; health tax raised again; fuel tax escalator raised; vehicle excise duty up; tobacco duty escalator raised; stamp duty on properties over £250,000; corporation tax changed Windfall tax on utilities.

March 1998

Married couple's allowance cut; travel insurance tax raised; tax on casinos and fruit machines raised; fuel tax escalator brought forward; car tax upped; foreign earnings tax relief abolished; professions tax concessions abolished; capital gains tax imposed on nonresidents; new restrictions on CGT relief; corporation tax payments brought forward; higher stamp duty rates raised; some hydrocarbon duties up; extra diesel duty; landfill tax raised.

March 1999

National insurance contributions earnings limit raised; NICs for selfemployed raised; married couple's allowance abolished; mortgage tax relief abolished; self-employed contractors taxed more; company car mileage allowance limited; tobacco duty escalator brought forward; insurance premium tax up; vocational training tax relief scrapped; employer NICs put on benefits; VAT on some banking services raised; premiums paid to tenants by landlords taxed; duty on domestic fuel oil up; excise duty for lorries raised; landfill tax escalator introduced; top rates of stamp duty raised again.

March 2000

Tobacco duty up; top rates of stamp duty up again; extra tax on life assurance companies; tax haven rules tightened.

April 2002

Personal allowance frozen; national insurance threshold frozen; NICs for employees up; NICs for employers up; NICs for self-employed up; North Sea tax up; tax on some alcoholic drinks up; new stamp duty regime; corporate debt rules tightened

April 2003

VAT on electronically supplied services; domestic staff brought into national Insurance regime; betting duty changed; tax on red diesel and fuel oil up; tax haven rules change to cover Irish offshoots Vehicle excise duty up.

March 2004

Small business tax; white vans taxed; transfer pricing tax raised; increase on taxes for trusts; duty on red diesel raised again; Liquified petroleum gas tax up.

Every April

Council tax raised.
