Police in Australia have made what is believed to be the world's biggest ecstasy seizure.

Drugs squad officers found more than five million tablets with an estimated street value of more than ?100 million on Melbourne's waterfront.

The drugs were discovered in a shipping container carrying ceramic tiles imported from Italy this week. The tablets were concealed in cavities around some of the boxes of tiles and were identified using x-ray equipment.

More than one ton of tablets was found in a search.

Federal police officers monitored the container until it was delivered to a factory in Thomastown in north Melbourne. Two men were later arrested as they attempted to recover the tablets.

Another two men were arrested in police raids.
