Gunmen today assassinated an adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari.

Wael Rubaie and his driver were shot dead as they drove through the Mansour district of Baghdad this morning. It is the latest of a series of killings of officials by insurgents, who have stepped up attacks since a new government was announced last month.

Seven Iraqi battalions, backed by American forces, have launched an offensive in Baghdad in an effort to stop the violence that has killed more than 550 people in less than a month. They are targeting insurgents who have attacked the road to the capital's airport.
