Richard Hammond: moved out of ICU

Top Gear host Richard Hammond looks to be making a dramatic recovery, doctors' reports today suggested.
The TV presenter, suffering from brain injuries following his 300mph jet car smash, has been moved out of intensive care.
A spokesman for Leeds General Infirmary, where the 36-year-old was airlifted following the crash on Wednesday afternoon, said: "Richard Hammond is making satisfactory progress. This morning he has been moved out of intensive care and on to a high dependency unit."
The positive news comes as pressure mounts on the BBC over the safety of its Top Gear stunts.
Staff on the programme have revealed "very, very serious concerns" over safety and working hours - and police and health and safety officials have launched probes into the accident.
A source close to the programme said: "The pressures on the Top Gear team are just enormous. They are working all the hours they humanly can."
Crew members were reportedly planning to air their concerns at a meeting with programme executives this week.
In a recent incident, staff allegedly narrowly avoided injury when a car skidded off a test track during filming.
The source told TV industry website Broadcastnow: "The test driver wasn't happy about the position of the crew but they are expected to get the shots that are needed. People working on the show have been really concerned about health and safety and having to work from dawn until dusk."
The BBC denied the near-miss and a spokesman said the planned meeting this week was "categorically not about health and safety". He added: "All BBC programmes, including Top Gear, take health and safety extremely seriously."
Nevertheless, if the BBC is found to have failed in its care of duty to the TV host, it could face criminal charges.
Today his fellow Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson told how he had raised a smile from his injured colleague. "I said, 'The reason you're here is because you're a crap driver.' He then smiled at me. It was an amazing moment," he said.

All of the Top Gear crew are fantastic. Our thoughts and prayers are with Richard and his family at this time but knowing how tenacious Richard can be I am sure he will soon be back in the driving seat doing what he does best. We love you Richard. God Bless you and your family
- Chris, Vancouver, Canada
I would like to take this opportunity to wish Richard a speedy recovery, and to say best wishes to his family. I am an avid Top Gear fan and was shocked to hear of his accident. Richard your drive and personality will help to pull you through this. Myself, my family, and the nation are behind you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
- Colin Jewell, Plymouth, United Kingdom
he knows the risks as we all do. it is only when an accident happens that we admit to being voyeristic and to not like seeing the consequences. Crocodiles, cars, what next?Human nature is that way, we know this.
- Russ Large, united kingdom grimsthorpe
It was tragedy what happened to Richard and I hope he makes a full recovery. What are the BBC playing at? Putting presenter's or rather giving presenter's such freedom, as we all know Mr Clarkson has influence on the programme and direction!!
As for the programme, and I have suggested for years, it should be changed in format. It is great showing dream cars, we all love it but the programme has degenerated into a comic strip where we have to witness old school boys yahooing around.
- Joey, belfast
Richard's work on Crufts was fantastic.
- Jonet, Prague
Now is the time to review all "lads" shows which risk life and limb. These shows are a menace. Every boy-racer in the country tries to be like Geremy Clarkson and, as a result, the death toll is higher every year due to bad and careless driving.
We need more sensible shows about cars. Lets hear about mileage, safety, and reliability for a change.
Every time a young man is brain-damaged in a road accident Clarkson and his greedy BBC Controllers should ask whether they bear some degree of responsibility.
Will we ever see the film of his crash? Probably on the internet but it would be sensible for the BBC to be unflinching and show how this foolish young man nearly killed himself to impress his peers.
What next? Bungee jumping tv presenters?
Please BBC accept some moral responsibility and make a car programme about the cars that real people drive every day.
Or is there some other agenda? Free high performance cars for the fatcat BBC Producers?
- Steven Armstrong, leeds,england
Top Gear may be seen by most of today's whizz-kids , and particularly by it's good but immature presenters as being a great show. I disagree. Whilst I too, love these dream machines, most of the cars that are presented here, and the way they are driven is an incentive for imbeciles to copy, and the programm contributes nothing to road safety, quite the contrary. It is a programm for hedonists, who,if they desire to behave as Jeremy and the others, should be on the race track and not trying to show everyone how wonderful they are on public roads.
- Ray King, London England
Richard, I hope everything will be alright and that you will be back on Top Gear and with your family as soon as possible.
- Bogdan, Oradea, Romania
I wish Richard a speedy recovery and my thoughts go out to his family. Top Gear will not be the same without him. Top Gear should not be axed because of Richard's accident.
- C Edwards, Liverpool, England
Let's just hope that Richard is back on screens as soon as possible. We think he is a brilliant presenter and wish him all the luck in the world with a speedy recovery.
- Heather Pinder, Beverley, East Yorkshire great britain
Top Gear is the best program on TV no doubt. The guys presenting it are marvellous to say the least. I'm pretty sure every motor enthusiast is rooting for Hammond to get well and get back on the programme, because Top Gear wouldn't be the same either without him or with someone else.
- Nick & Stacey, Sheffield, England
I'm praying for you Richard!
- M, Lithuania
I sincerely hope that Richard pulls through, Top Gear wouldn't be the same and he is just a great guy.
- Ásgeir, Akureyri, Iceland
You have brought us all so much joy from your fun loving attitude to cars, thank you for the risks you have taken. I am so sorry that to keep us entertained you have ended up in such a vulnerable position. I wish you and your family luck and love. I have faith that Richard will pull through.
- Sabrina Fawcett, Newark, Notts
Top Gear, an outstanding program. Broadcast by marvelous guys, and very well aware of what the automobile industry includes. The advantages and all the dangers. Come on guys,.. and family,.. my prayers are with you.
- Envicta, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
As soon as I heard the news I rushed to the TV to see if he was OK. Personally, I think he is the best presenter of Top Gear and I don't think I could ever watch the show again if he wasn't presenting it. Hope he does survive this ordeal and then maybe Jeremy won't be so mean on him and put cars up high on the cool wall so Hamster can't reach them. Thinking of everyone affected by this.
- A, Manchester
I sincerely hope that Richard makes a full recovery from his terrible accident but I also hope that Top Gear doesn't suffer as a result of a backlash caused by people's shock and anger at what has happened.
Richard is an experienced - not to mention incredibly brave - driver and journalist and he probably understood the risks as much as anybody. However, I think that he should have received more training. I've been driving for 20 years yet I wouldn't want to get behind the wheel of a 300mph jet-powered dragster after only few hours instruction!
Anyway, the most important thing is that Richard pulls through 100% and rejoins the Top Gear team.
- Tim Slater, Cambridge
Give the guy a break! Its not as if this attempt was taking place on a public road. The show is extremely entertaining and I hope Richard makes a full and speedy recovery and is back behind the wheel at Top Gear just as soon as he can.
- Gavin Spring, Lismore, Australia
What a shame to see the wowsers come out to take a free kick when our thoughts should be with Richard and his family. He loved what he was doing, with the side benefit of bringing enjoyment to so many. Not to mention envy that we can't enjoy the experiences Top Gear provides to the guys.
The recent tragic deaths of Steve Irwin and Peter Brock have illustrated how those with a real passion for what they do have such an impact on the rest of us, including showing us how to live and enjoy life. Top Gear does the same.
Pull through Richard and get back to showing us how to have fun with cars and keeping manufacturers honest in their product offerings.
- Mal Allen, Canberra, Australia
Richard, I came down to Dunsfold to watch you film the show last year. Having seen the fun and enthusiasm you guys have making that show I think I know what you would say, even now after this horrific accident, to those of the nanny state that say the show should be axed. As one of the many thousands whose life you brighten up with your antics, get better really soon and make sure we are able to continue to enjoy "lads at play" God Bless
- Graham Mills, Guildford, Surrey
Top Gear is one of the funniest programmes on telly and I find it absurd and a sorry sign of the times that people are obsessed with pinning blame on someone through infinite and pointless investigations, when we should all just be hoping the Hamster pulls through. My thoughts are with him, his family, James and Jeremy. Spare a thought for James May who allegedly was originally supposed to be doing the stunt but swapped with Richard.
Come on Richard, all the normal people are hoping and praying that you pull through.
- Liam Wood, Sutton in Ashfield
Such a truly tragic accident. My thouhts and prayers are with Richard and his family this tough time. Look forward to seeing you back on Top Gear mate, I know you'll pull through.
- Ashleigh, Smeaton, Victoria, Australia
I have no interest in cars but watch Top Gear every week with my sons, it is the best programme on TV. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. With the courage and determination you have shown on TV and with your personality and strenghth of character I am sure you will pull through. Thinking of you all.
- Jayne Black, Llandudno, North Wales
Guess I one of the oldies (63),who watched the progame, but 'hamster' brought a certain something of his own to the show. Get well soon mate, love to you, your lovely family and the other guys at Top Gear.
- Mike, London
Hope he pulls through. Always enjoyed watching the shows.
- Chris, Houston, TX, United States
We are praying so hard for Richard and all of his family, including the dogs! It is so unfair that such a nice, decent, human being has to go through this and take all of you there too. I know you don't know me or my family but we have lit a candle and are praying so hard for all of you. I do hope with all my heart that you find some comfort in the richness that this wonderful man has blessed us all with. Our thoughts and wishes and especially prayers are with you all right now. Funnily enough, we arn't normally this religious. This time just like close family is different!! You are so in all of our thoughts. God bless and good luck.
- The Siely Family, Norfolk, England
Absolute legend. Very funny man, he will be completely fine and back on top gear before we know it.. with whiter teeth than ever before!
- Tom Walker, Stroud, Gloucestershire
Hold on in there Richard, the worlds already lost one of it's good guys with Steve Irwin, we can't afford to lose you too.
Our thoughts are with you and you family, here's to a speedy recovery.
- Cheryl, Cockermouth, England
Heres to you and your family Rich, hope you get better quickly and can't wait to see you again on Top Gear. Best wishes.

Very sad to hear of your accident. We are all rooting for you here, fingers crossed and well wishes from us here.
Sending well wishes to your family, cannot imagine how they are feeling.
Would be a special treat to see you back in the next series, joking around again.
- Sharon Batt, Bromley, Kent, UK
Hey Hamster
You get well asap - who else on your great show will take care of Top Gear the dog!
Thinking of you and wishing for a speedy and full recovery for you.
- Chris And Sandy Green, Hereford, UK
Go for it Hamster. Keep on waiting to hear good news and we are sure there will be. We spent 14 months in Stoke Mandeville hospital given no hope but we walked out together just dont give in keep fighting and our thoughts and love and prayers are with you all.
- Ali & Nick Castle, Penryn, Cornwall
I'm sure, I'll see you soon on TV Richard! Good luck.
- Maciek, Konin, Poland
Hamster, we are all thinking of all and sending our wishes to your family. May love and light reach you and lift you above this horrific accident.
- Karen Tuke, Ypenburg, Holland
I don't understand why they are painting him to have been so inexperienced. Hammond, Clarkson, and May have been test driving and dealing with cars for years before this. And why the former record holder is calling for a full investigation baffles me. Is he afraid Hammster will steal his title?
I'm rooting for him. Pull through Hammster. Shake it off and show us what you're made of.
- Kevin Swarner, Jackson, New Jersey, US
Please pass on my best wishes to Richard, I look forward to seeing him back with the rest of the team as soon as possible.
A truly brilliant presenter and program.
- Andy Fletcher, Dover. Kent.
Are thoughts and prayers are with you Richard and your family. What you have done on the show in the past shows great courage and you are well loved by millions of fans. You make top gear what it is. I now you will pull though. Youve proved your a fighter by the tasks youve completed successfully. Look foreward to seeing you on our screens soon arguing with Jeremy over the cool wall. Thinking of you all in this tough time.
- Jo, bedford beds
A thoroughly nice guy with a great sense of fun and an absolutely natural comic who played Stan to Jeremy and James' Olly.
Sorry, but you have to be ancient to appreciate that.
Get well mate, we're all rooting for you.
- Clive Brown, Wantage, UK
I hope I speak on behalf of the nation, in the fact that we have been rocked by this tragedy. Richard is an amazing TV presenter, who brings great joy and laughter. The fact that he was engaging in such a high risk activity may raise questions, but only proves to show his courage and spirit are as immense as his personality. Hang on in there Richard. We are all rooting for you. Our thoughts are with you and your family.
- Julie Paget, Derbyshire UK
I too hope that Richard recovers. He was doing what a lot of us secretly would love to do, but lack the opportunity and, lets be fair, the guts. Please lets not get all the sad Nellys out, saying "I told you, it's dangerous". You can deploy all the safety precautions in the world, but guess what - in the end you will still die!
It is far better to be somebody who enjoys life, takes it by the scruff of the neck & gives it a good shake, rather than a wimp who does nothing and slides slowly and tracelessly into oblivion.
I feel for Richard and his family, and hope that he recovers fully, but I would say that he has written a few lines more in the book of life than many of us will achieve.
Good Luck Richard.
- Bill Miles, Burton upon Trent. UK
we are so very sorry to hear about Hamster.
Please accept our apologies and wish him all the luck in the world for him to get well soon
- Daniel Giles, Chatha, Kent, UK
what a star, made top gear. You ask why is a TV presenter trying to break the land speed record? there's a saying, "he who does nothing will never do any thing".
- Stevie, welshpool, wales
Undoubtedly one of the best presenters on TV, (along with jeremy of course!), a really fun guy, totally crazy of course, but brilliant! Love him. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, praying for a quick recovery.
- Ruth Meakings, Ramsgate, Kent, Uk
BIG UP BREH!! IT WAS A CRAZY STUNT BUT FOR US THE AUDIENCE. WHICH IS WHY IM GOING TO SAY DONT RISK YOUR LIFE TO SATISFY OUR NEEDS. WE'LL BE HAPPY KNOWING YOUR THERE ON OUR TV SCREENS AND MY CONDOLENCESES TO THE FAMILY WISH YOU THE BEST. DONT DISAPOINT US RICHARD PULL THROUGH MAN. AGAIN HOPE YOU THE BEST. A SINCERE FAN. HOPE TO SEE YOU IN THE NEXT SERIES!!!!
- Dabeer Hussain, ravensthope dewsbury
My heart goes out to everyone around Richard. My family has been through this same ordeal when my brother was in a rally crash. Thankfully he came through it, but it was a long road. I know about the waiting and not knowing and it is heartbreaking. I feel it for his family because it is so public and I feel that this will have every do-gooder on the band wagon about safety just because he's famous. In the last month alone in Ireland we have had 3 motor sport accidents with similar injuries, with one still in a coma and not so much as a word in the media about it. Bottom line is, no amount of talking or analysing with turn back the clock and Richard is in the condition he is from doing what he loved. We should all just pray that he will get through this.
- Tricia Kent, Ireland
really sad to hear wat happend to him realy hope he gets better top gear wont b the same with out him

- Dan, worthing britain
Driving very fast is always a risky business, whatever the circumstances (remember Ayrton Senna). I don't think enough serious and rational thought went into the decision to try for the record.
- Mark Harding, Lisbon, Portugal
Richard Hammond and Top Gear have shown millions what man and machine are capable of. So too has the story of poor Margret Davidson, My thought are with both.
- Lou, Barnet, England

- Alex Shevchenko, hull,uk
Why is a TV presenter trying to break the land speed record anyway? I am not an expert but surely this kind of stunt should only be attempted by a professional racing driver? This is negligence and must be investigated. Best wishes to him and his family.
- James Munro, London UK

- Alan & Diana Peek, Alsancak North Cyprus
Very sad to hear about the accident, however signs are that he is improving, so we are all praying for a full and speedy recovery.
Some background, this car was built as a pair back in the 1980's. The other car, 'Hellbender', crashed in 1986 killing the driver Mark Woodley at Santa Pod Raceway. Three years earlier Jet Car pioneeer Alan Herridge also died in a Jet Car accident as Santa Pod, although this was a different design to the Vampire and Hellbender cars. Pushing the boundries of speed in any vehicle is inherently dangerous and setting 'Land Speed Records' take many weeks and months of preparation, I think we have found out the hard way that this should be left to the 'professionals'
- Tom, Northampton, England
Richard seems like a lovely bloke, I can only hope that he makes a full recovery and gets to laugh at the whole situation on a future edition of top gear. My thoughts are with his family and friends.
- John, Hertford
Not good news!! We have just lost Brocky in a Targa crash (sure there will be a few poms out there who know who he is) and the Croc Hunter. Lets hope that Richard recovers - for the minority of petrol heads and adventurers, we really don't want to lose any more of the good guys for a while. Even though we are probably a year or two behind in our shows, I really enjoy topgear, and part of that is the personalities.
- Kezza, Canberra, Australia
I was shocked when I heard the news, I wish you a speedy recovery Richard, my thoughts are with you and your family.

There is alot of support and positive thoughts from all his fans and I know Richard will be back on our screens again xx

I was very sad to hear the news about top gear presenter Richard Hammond. I have been a huge fan of Top Gear for many years and must say that Richard is one of my favourites. My thoughts go out to Richard and his family and I will say a prayer for him tonight. We are a couple of years behind over here in NZ but Top Gear has a lot of fans here and I know that we will all be praying for Richard to pull through.
- Nik Kench, auckland new zealand
Am devastated to learn of Richard Hammonds accident. We have just watched the news on BBC World. Out here we have to watch reruns of Top Gear Extra and have The Best of Top Gear currently showing this month. One of the things that drove me mad about the UK was the "nanny state" and Richard is the complete opposite - we sincerely hope that he will continue to uphold that attitute for many years to come! His unfailing sense of humour is a tonic to everyone who watches the programme - even those people who can never aspire to the type of car shown on most of the programmes!!
Our thoughts go out to his family, together with the rest of the Top Gear Team.

I hope the wee man pulls through, as it would be a great loss to many people, let alone his family. Press, if he gets better, give him peace to recuperate with his family. Love to him and his familt. Get well soon. xxx
- Jacque Love, Falkirk Scotland!!
I hope this doesn't mean that we will see a tamer Richard. Hope you get better mate.
- John Murdock, lahore, pakistan
He's a brave and brilliant man. Thoughts with him and his young family. However, one has to question Clarkson and his show for pushing a non-pro speed driver past his limits.
- Phil, London, UK
The guy is an excellent presenter and I really hope that he pulls through this but what are motoring journalists/broadcasters doing trying to break land speed records? Its a dangerous enough task for professional drivers - which they are NOT! Perhaps 'Top Gear' is now starting to go to far.
All the very best for a speedy recovery Richard.
- Mark Poole, Ealing, UK
