Struggle: The cashier clashes with one of the raiders who is wielding a sword in his right hand

This is the moment three sword-wielding raiders robbed a petrol station.

The CCTV image shows the brave cashier struggling with one of the thugs. Despite the man's courage, the raider overpowers him.

The robber then pinned the cashier against the wall, allowing another gang member to rifle through the till.

The cashier was bludgeoned across the back of the head with one of the blades after the gang stormed into Skippool Garage, in Singleton, Lancashire, at around 9.30pm on Sunday.

Police were shocked by the degree of violence n the robbery, which netted the raiders £250 in cash and cigarettes.

Sgt Andy Lawless, of Blackpool police's robbery squad, said: "The man working in the garage has received a nasty cut to the back of his head which required several staples in it at hospital.

"At first the guy behind the till has had a go back and tried to fight off the offenders, possibly not realising at that stage the swords are real."

The gang fled in a silver MG sports car stolen from Hambleton in Lancashire last week.
