Swim centre bars two-year-old girl because she isn't Muslim

Darby Williams with her father Lee.

When Lee Williams saw a parent-and-toddler session advertised at his local pool, he thought it was the perfect chance to teach his young daughter to swim.

Arriving at the leisure centre already in her swimming costume, two-year-old Darby was desperate to get into the water.

But she was left in tears when staff said they were not allowed in the pool because the session was for Muslim women and their children only.

Mr Williams, 34, bitterly criticised Manchester City Council yesterday after it admitted that advertising for the session, on its website and on leaflets, had been misleading. 'I can understand why Muslim women need to have this kind of session, but the council should not be advertising it as parent and toddler,' he said.

'They made out I'd got it wrong, but I had checked on the council's website for the times.'

The incident happened at Abraham Moss Leisure Centre in Crumpsall. Mr Williams, a delivery driver from Blackley, had seen the parent-and-toddler session being promoted on the council's website and a leaflet.

But when they arrived, reception staff told Mr Williams he could not swim with Darby because it was a women-only session and they would have to come back later. Despite his protests that he had specifically checked the time of the session, the staff were insistent.

It was only when he telephoned the council to complain that he was told the session had been privately booked for Muslim women.

According to Islam, women are forbidden from exposing their bodies to any man but their husband.

A spokesman for Manchester City Council apologised to Mr Williams. He said: 'We were sorry to hear that he had been turned away. We are ensuring that our website is updated and staff are briefed so this does not happen again.'

The incident is the latest in a series of rows between local authorities and the public over swimming lessons for ethnic minority groups.

In December last year, Croydon Council in South London came under fire for running Muslim-only sessions at one of its leisure centres.

Non-Muslim members of Thornton Heath leisure centre were angry that they could not swim during the Muslim-only sessions on Saturdays and Sundays unless they obeyed the strict dress code.

For men, this involved wearing shorts which kept the navel hidden and were extended below the knee, while women bathers had to wear a swimming costume which covered their body from the neck down to the ankle.

Similarly, Wolverhampton Council and South Lanarkshire local authority have also been criticised for operating women- only swimming for Muslims.

Whether is a muslim only or C of E only session, the advertising was for parent and toddler why is it that the "parent" can only be female? Can't a father take a part in his childs upbringing and teach them how to swim. So not only a possible racist debate but also a sexist one

Actually as the media, (controlled by a minority group)has been potraying muslims in a bad light, Im not suprised at all to see several negative comments showered upon muslims as usual just because they practise their beliefs to the core. For those illiterate to other people's beliefs, guess what, its not just your belief that counts in this whole world. And, for those who don't take their own beliefs seriously, guess what, others who take their belief very seriously. Muslim women must cover every part of their bodies in public except for the face and hands (those who wish to cover more even better) therefore they are not able to go swimming any time and need specific inclusive dates. Lets all educate ourselves about others, afterall, we are all here to stay, all human.

Basically, if you dont like my home, or dont feel confortable in it.... return to yours please.

- Ana, northampton

.... here smilling away..... and comparing this situation with a house.
You have a house(england) and you kindly invite other people to visit you, and not happy with using the chairs, beds, sitting room to be comfortable.... they also change the decoration of my house!!!!!!!!
:-o

and we, english are so incredibly stupid that we let it happen!
Go to Arabia, or any of those asian countries and try to change the decoration, to see what are the consecuences.

this is so unbelivable, it actually makes me laugh!!
:-D

I come from Dubai. Ive seen Europeans and Americans moving about freely and safely in their own dresses and also wearing swimsuits on beaches and having bars and clubs to go to which are specifically for the expats from Europe etc. And this is all happening in a country where they're still expats and not nationals of that country. I dont see why muslims who are British should be denied to have their specific days and times? For God's Sake it's not that they have taken over all the days and booked 24/7. I think most councils propogate EQUAL AND FAIR OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL.
And for " it’s outrageous for Muslims to dictate what to do in our own country It’s a joke" well if you really see whats happening around us in the whole of the world...i dont think poor muslims are dictating anything anywhere!! quite ironic....

Pretty biased reporting - the title implies that the little girl was turned away because she wasn't a certain religion (something she has no individual control over). If you read between the lines (or just the actual lines but from a neutral standpoint) it sounds like the reason they were turned away had more to do with the fact that the parent was a man, not a woman, and thus unable to take part in a womens-only swim session. Mr Williams had a right to be furious with the council - their advertising was completely misleading.

He, however, understands "why Muslim women need to have this kind of session" which says much more than the idea that "Britons should have the right to go swimming to teach their children to swim in their own country". Very divisive.

It highlights a rather narrow-minded view that Britons are one race and 'those Muslims' are another. Islam is not actually a race as you can have Asian Muslims, Arab Muslims, European Muslims, Black Muslims and White Muslims (Briton Muslims, if you wish). Ethnic Muslims might be able to 'go back to their own country' but what about Muslims native to this land. To which country should they depart?

I disagree with the public Muslim-only sessions - gender separation should be enough, publicly, at least (and its not like it'll be all of the time) but when a session is privately booked, I believe it is the booker's decision as to which clientèle can attend. After all they're paying for the pool, no?

- Mona Hughes, London

One thing I forgot to add, do you think in a Muslim country they would do a English women and their children only session., I don't think so!

- Miss K Long, Northampton, England

This is absolutely appalling! This is unfair discrimination. Like someone else mentioned this is another example of Britons feeling like strangers in their own pools. Britons should have the right to go swimming to teach their children to swim in their own country. OK, it’s understandable for women wanting to have a women session in general but it’s outrageous for Muslims to dictate what to do in our own country It’s a joke!

- Miss K Long, Northampton, England

I totally agree with swimming pools for women only (not only for Muslim women) but for all women only. I think women should have the sense to dress appropriately and not flaunt their bodies around and have respect for other women around them.

- S.Baz-Itani, Manchester

Where are all the Lefties crying "apartheid state"?

- Ellen Morris, Norwich

I agree with Ken - this is totally ludicrous and an example of reverse discrimination. Another examples of Britons being made to feel like they are strangers in their own country.

- M. Lawlor Expat, Florida USA

I trust that the authorities allow for Christian only mixed naked swimming?

- Pam, Hatfield

Isn't this just a form of segregation? This is insulting to men in a way - not all men visit swimming pools just to ogle women in their cossies. I would think in this instance the father would be far too busy looking after his daughter.

- Muffinmaker, Bedford, UK

I am white, English, educated and wonder where I went wrong. I have lived in many countries and have never found one where foreigners by birth, race, colour or creed had the ability to exclude natives because they were not native to that country.

- Ken, London

Perhaps we should have a Christian mothers and toddlers swimming session and see the reaction to that. In the same light as the Black Police Officers Association, perhaps it is now time for a White Police Officers Association. This is negative inequality...

- Anon, London

Why should muslim only swimming be forced upon the general public? If muslim women need to swim by themselves, shouldn't their local mega mosque be providing something for this? Obviously they need to build a swimming pool alongside the many mosques that are appearing up and down the country. This clearly discriminates against non muslims and is seen as a failure to integrate by many.

- Brandon Thomas, London UK

Give the Leisure Centre a call and see if they'll allow a CofE only group to book the pool for an afternoon!
