Sarah Ferguson has suffered a lot of negative headlines for treating her children more as sisters than daughters so perhaps she thought it wise to take out Princess Eugenie for a 17th birthday dinner last night at Cipriani restaurant in Mayfair on the eve of the big day.

As Fergie showed off an eye-catching black and white coat complete with a bold pair of black striped tights to photographers, Beatrice was busy on her mobile no doubt making arrangements for a party with her school friends tonight.

Party planner: Princess Eugenie celebrates her 17th Birthday this evening with a private party. Below: Her mother Sarah Ferguson shows off an eye-catching black and white coat complete with a bold pair of striped tights

At least it might ensure that Eugenie is free to let her hair down away from the public glare after a series of unfortunate tabloid stories about the time the Duchess of York exposed her daughters to partygoers taking drugs during a family holiday to Jamaica in 2005.

The Duchess of York's daughter is studying for her A-levels at Marlborough College - alma mater of the likes of Kate Middleton and Chris de Burgh.

Eugenie has been boosted by the news that her bodyguard of 10 years, Paul Crisp, has been appointed the school's first full-time head of security.

He will certainly have his work cut out tonight.

When I were a lad, you "came of age" when you were 18, maybe even...
