            Earl Spencer

In happier times: Earl Spencer and former wife Caroline

Earl Spencer's estranged wife Caroline was granted a "quickie" divorce from him today on the grounds of his "unreasonable behaviour".

Countess Spencer's decree nisi was granted by a judge sitting at the Principal Registry of the Family Division in central London.

The case, Spencer CV v CEM, was one of a list of 30 "matrimonial and civil partnership causes for pronouncement of decree or order under the special procedure" before District Judge Kenneth White.

Earl Spencer, 42, brother of Diana, Princess of Wales, and Countess Spencer, who have two children, married in December 2001.

Charles Edward Maurice Spencer, then 37, who gave his profession as land owner, and Caroline Victoria Freud, then 35, the daughter of a property developer, were married at Althorp Park in Northamptonshire.

Both had been married before.

In a question-and-answer style statement in support of her divorce petition, Countess Spencer does not give any details of her former husband's behaviour.

She is asked: "Is the respondent's (Earl Spencer) behaviour as set out in your petition and particulars continuing?"

Countess Spencer replies: "Yes."
