The arrangement was good enough for superhero Batman – and now it is being copied by one of Britain's best-paid football superstars.

Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko is spending up to £1million to create a "Batcave" at his £7million mansion to house his fleet of luxury cars.

At the touch of a button on an electronic keypad, the £30million Ukrainian international, who earns £120,000 a week, will be able to raise or lower the vehicles by remote control from the underground car park on hydraulic ramps.

Sheva, as he is known to his legion of fans, has asked his local council for planning permission to build the high-tech six-car garage.

Among others, it will be home to his £130,000 Bentley Continental GT Turbo, £60,000 Mercedes four-wheel drive and £110,000 Ferrari F360. Each will be housed in cages, which are mechanically shuffled around the basement area.

Oxfordshire-based Wöhr Parking Systems, a company which has pioneered mechanical parking technology, are consultants on the job. The system is used in many large developments in city centres where parking space is at a premium.

The 30-year-old footballer and his wife Kristen, a former American model, bought the whitewashed house in Virginia Water, Surrey, from banker Roger Jenkins for £7.1million last November. It has an indoor swimming pool and spa, a bar and nine bedrooms.

Plans submitted to Runnymede Borough Council's planning committee show that Shevchenko wants to knock down an existing garage and the flat above it to make way for the subterranean supercar shelter.

Shevchenko and his wife have in the past described themselves as committed Anglophiles and say his move to Chelsea from AC Milan was inspired by their desire to raise their two sons, Christian and Jordan, in the UK.

Now they'll be able to raise (and lower) their motors here, too.

Amazing, I get four mates to push mine out of the garage and no planning permission required.
