Beach holiday Japanese-style as sunseekers dig for clams

It's a glorious day on the coast of Japan and the beaches are packed. But these holiday-makers aren't interested in sunbathing. Instead they are taking part in the honoured tradition of clam digging.

The sandy beaches of Yokohama are rich with shellfish and city dwellers were quick to take advantage of their long weekend to enjoy the natural resource.

Yokohama is Japan's second largest city and an international port. In a bid to become "people-friendly," Yokohama officials have created spaces where people can enjoy the ocean.

The flagship is the MM21 zone that boasts glorious views of the bay, an international convention centre, exhibition hall, memorial park where the sailing ship Nippon Maru is on view, and the Yokohama Maritime Museum.
