It could, of course, have been complete coincidence.

A large middle-aged man who is clearly no stranger to drink staggers out of a society party shouting: "That bastard put his hands on my wife!"

He is persuaded to go back inside by his host Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, who is celebrating his 40th birthday at his £12million London mansion.

Freddie staggers out of the party with his nose cut and his horns missing

Shortly afterwards, Lord Freddie Windsor emerges through the front door, sporting a dazed expression and a cut on his nose but minus the devil's horns he was wearing when he arrived.

The timing of his departure from the lavish festivities, in the early hours of yesterday, led to inevitable speculation that the accident-prone son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent had become involved in another scrape.

Party guests spoke of a fight on the stairs, after which members of various European royal families tried to calm things down.

But a spokesman for 27-year-old Lord Freddie denied that he had taken part in any fisticuffs.

While he could not remember how his nose was cut, he thought it might have been the result of 'enthusiastic dancing'.

'That bastard had his hands on my wife!' White-shirted Prince Pavlos reasons with a guest

Lord Freddie, a financial analyst who is 31st in line to the throne, had arrived at the Heaven and Hell-themed party in Chelsea with his sister Lady Gabriella, wearing angel's wings, and their parents.

Prince Michael's features were concealed behind a bird mask while his wife chose an extravagant feathered headdress.

Other guests included Prince Andrew, Viscount Linley, looking mean and moody in black leather as he arrived on his motorbike, Prince Felipe and Princess Christina of Spain, Prince Haakkon of Norway and Naomi Campbell.

They were served veal burgers with foie gras and salad, while every table was supplied with bottles of malt whisky and vodka.

Earlier in the evening: Prince Michael arrives with his wife, son and daughter

Ice sculptures of angels graced a marquee with room for 200 in the garden, which was meant to be Heaven. Meanwhile, the swimming pool in the basement was covered over and decked out to resemble Hell, with stilt-walkers and erotic dancers.

It was well after midnight when the team of Gurkha security guards policing the event started barking: "Problem inside, problem inside" into their walkie-talkies.

"Then a middle-aged Greek guy comes out with Prince Pavlos and security guards were running everywhere," said our man in the front garden.

"The Greek guy was clearly involved in a fight. All we could hear him saying was, 'That bastard had his hands on my wife. Nobody puts their hands on my wife'.

"He seemed very, very drunk. He was clearly a very good friend of Pavlos, who was pleading with him saying, 'What are you doing? This is my birthday, you can't do this'.

"Then Prince Pavlos takes him down into the basement and Lord Freddie Windsor comes out of the front door."

One of the last to leave the party was Prince Andrew, who departed after 4am following a pole dancing performance by two strippers supplied by Penthouse magazine.

Although Greece abolished its monarchy in 1974, Prince Pavlos would be the heir to the throne if it were ever to be reinstated. A godson of the Prince of Wales, he is married to society style icon Marie-Chantal Miller.
