A boy of six accidently hanged himself with a skipping rope in a freak accident at his home.

Mason Jones had been playing in the bedroom of his younger twin sisters when the game went tragically wrong.

As he played with the rope it became entangled around his neck and the young boy lost consciousness.

Mason Jones

Mason Jones was said to be a 'lovely little boy' with 'the face of an angel'

He was found by his mother in the bedroom of the terraced house and she desperately tried to revive him.

She called paramedics who attempted to resuscitate the boy before rushing him to hospital by ambulance. Doctors continued to fight to save the boy but he was later pronounced dead.

His mother Jennifer Jones, 29, is being comforted at her home in Bury, Greater Manchester by family and friends.

She was said to be 'absolutely devastated' by the tragedy and was too upset to speak about the tragedy.

A police source said: "It appears the young boy was playing some game with the skipping rope and somehow it has got round his neck and tightened.

"He lost consciousness and despite the best efforts of the famnily, doctors and paramedics he could not be resuscitated."

Neighbours said they were shocked by the tragedy and described Mason as having 'the face of an angel'.

One resident said: "He was a lovely little boy who always had a smile on his face and we are all in shock."

Another said: "He was your typical youngster. He had a really bonny face and was always running around. You would often see him paying with his younger twin sisters."

The tragedy happened about 6pm on Friday evening and has stunned the local community with special prayers being held at the nearby St Joseph's RC Church.

Father Robert Morrow said he announced the news to 'lots of stunned faces' at the beginning of Mass.

He added: "There has been a lot of support. I was called to the hospital on Friday and have spent a lot of time with the family who are very upset. They came to Mass on Saturday night and will receive a lot of support."

Mason was a pupil at St Joseph and St Bede Primary in Bury where staff were breaking the news to his classmates yesterday just days before the start of the summer holidays.

Headteacher Sue McAvady said: "The school community was stunned to hear of the tragic death of Mason at the weekend.

"Mason loved school and had many friends. He was a happy boy and was always smiling. He will be very much missed by us all and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."

Police said that although an investigation was ongoing, the incident was being treated as a tragic accident.

A spokesman said: "It seems as though the children were playing a game which went wrong.

"The boy was taken to hospital for treatment, but medical staff were unable to save him, and he died.

"A police investigation into the circumstances surrounding this boy's death was launched but there were not found to be any suspicious circumstances. Obviously the family are extremely traumatised by this."
