'Ban machine cigarette sales'
Last updated at 12:16pm on 10.10.07Cigarette vending machines could be banned from pubs, clubs and hotels to stop children buying tobacco illegally.
Labour MP David Taylor is introducing a Private Member's Bill that would outlaw unsupervised tobacco sales, after concerns were raised that children were using machines to buy cigarettes, in defiance of the ban on sales to under-18s.

In Holland one needs to get a token from a barperson, or somebody similar, before being able to operate the machine in order to stop underage people using it. Surely the same could be done here instead of an outright ban.

Banning cigarette machines is pointless as children can find other means of buying cigarettes when they put their minds to it. Shouldn't the government be worried that children are going into pubs and clubs and focusing on that instead?
