Detectives have raided the surgeries of doctors who prescribed Anna Nicole Smith the drugs that killed her.

The police raids came as senior law officers said they believed a 'serious crime' might have been committed before the model's sudden death in February.

Anna Nicole's psychiatrist Dr Khristine Eroshevich and her physician Dr Sandeep Kapoor - already being investigated by US medical authorities over allegations they violated their own code – were raided in Los Angeles.

Former Playboy centrefold: Anna Nicole Smith

The 39-year-old former Playboy centrefold died of an overdose in a Florida hotel room after taking 11 different prescription drugs, including the heroin-based painkiller methadone and anti-depressants.

Police are believed to be probing whether these were prescribed properly.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown refused to reveal possible charges, but said: 'You don't go to a judge and get a search warrant for somebody's home unless you think some serious crime has been committed.'

Brown said he did not know if the criminal probe could lead to the exhumation of Smith's body, which is buried in the Bahamas.

He said investigators had learned 'quite a lot' from authorities there, but refused to elaborate.

Dr Eroshevich's lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, insisted the police probe 'has nothing to do with whether Dr Eroshevich contributed to Anna Nicole's death.'

Ellyn Garafalo, a lawyer for Dr Kapoor, confirmed the medic's home and offices were searched.
