Detectives are investigating the death of former Radio 1 DJ Kevin Greening after arresting a man on suspicion of supplying Class A drugs at the scene of his death.

Paramedics found Mr Greening's body on the eve of his birthday after being called to an address in Wandsworth, South London, on Saturday evening.

Mr Greening's family said the acclaimed DJ, 44, who presented the flagship Radio 1 breakfast show with Zoe Ball from 1997 to 1998, had died 'peacefully in his sleep'.

Detectives are investigating the death of former Radio 1 DJ Kevin Greening after Class A drugs were found at the scene of his death

A man in his 50s was arrested at the scene in connection with the death. He has been bailed to return in March on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs.

A post-mortem was held today at St George's Hospital Mortuary in south west London.

Scotland Yard's Homicide and Serious Crime Command is continuing its inquiries. The death is currently being treated as 'unexplained', a police spokesman said.

Radio 1 days: Kevin Greening shares a glass of wine with co-host Zoe Ball during their time as breakfast show hosts on Radio 1

Tributes for the openly gay star poured in yesterday, with former colleagues and fellow radio presenter praising his laconic wit and enterprising spirit.

Radio 5 Live's Simon Mayo, who worked with Greening at Radio 1 during his seven year spell at the BBC, said: "I'm finding it hard to take the whole thing in.

"I only got to know him when he joined Radio 1 but it was quite clear that he was a fantastically bright individual. He had a great brain.

"He had a very, very dry sense of humour and was quite shy really, sometimes embarrassed about having achieved the level of fame that he did.

"Anyone who listened to his programmes could tell he was extremely bright, extremely clever. If he had a 40-second voice-over for his first record he would probably put in eight, nine, 10 little funny bits just to get the whole thing going.

"He was a fantastic example as to how much work should go into a programme. He was naturally gifted, and I frankly find it rather hard to believe that he's not with us any more."

Former Cambridge graduate Greening, who joined the BBC as a trainee in 1991, was also a key name in the Virgin radio launch line-up in 1993.

Three years later, after filling in for Radio 1's flailing breakfast show hosts, Mark n' Lard - Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley - the Kent-born disc jockey was offered the job full-time alongside ex children's TV presenter, Miss Ball.

The pair - the self proclaimed Richard [Madeley] and Judy [Finnigan] of radio - became an instant hit with fans and added 230,000 new listeners to the show.

Within a year, however, Greening was dropped from the prestigious slot and given a weekend programme.

After working on Radio 5 Live and the BBC World Service, he appeared on Jazz FM before taking over the mid-morning show at alterative music station, Xfm.

In March this year he took over the afternoon slot at Smooth Radio.

John Myers, chief executive of the station's parent company GMG Radio, described his death as a 'terrible loss to broadcasting'.

He said: "We are extremely saddened to learn of the sudden death of Kevin.

"He was a talented broadcaster and we were privileged to have him as our afternoon presenter. He was passionate about radio and all kinds of music and will be sadly missed. It's a terrible loss to broadcasting.

"Our sympathies are with Kevin's family and friends at this time."

Radio 5 Live broadcaster Nick Wallis said Greening was held in 'very high regard' by the industry, adding: "I enjoyed Kevin's unassuming manner, generous nature and warm, wry, friendly outlook on life.

"I'm shocked he's not going to be here any more."

Chris North, Greening's agent, declined to comment further on the circumstances surrounding his death.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Officers attended a residential address in Wandsworth at 20:49 on Saturday following a call from the London Ambulance Service regarding a deceased male in his 40s found at the address.

"A man in his 50s was arrested at the scene in connection with the death and has subsequently been bailed to return on a date in March on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs pending further enquiries."
