Companies are being urged to give staff the day off on February 29 - to help the environment.

The extra leap year day, traditionally when women can propose to men, could help to tackle climate change.

The National Trust will announce today that all 4,800 staff and 49,000 volunteers will be told to take the 29th off, with employees getting paid for the day.

Staff will be asked to file a report on what they have achieved with the day but no action will be taken if they spent it doing nothing but watching television.

Other businesses, which will see staff working for free on the extra day, are being encouraged to join the Green Leap Day initiative.

Dame Fiona Reynolds, director-general of the National Trust, said: "Climate change is one of the biggest challenges today. We are looking at the impact of all our activities." Brendan Barber, general secretary of the TUC, said: "It's a great idea."

I tend to take the 29th off and keep my head down because I am such a catch. A Bank Holiday would mean I don't use up a holiday.
