Revealed: First pictures of all THREE women in tangled love life of 'suicide' chief constable
Last updated at 23:37pm on 14.03.08
Superintendent Julia Wortley is said to have had a relationship with Todd when they worked together for Scotland Yard
The full extent of Chief Constable Michael Todd's tangled love life was laid bare today as it emerged he had a relationship with a another officer as well as a three-year affair with a high-flying business woman.
Mr Todd, the married Greater Manchester police chief whose body was found on a Welsh mountain, had also made advances towards a string of other women.
The third woman in his life, Julia Wortley, 43, had a relationship with 'Hot Toddy', as he was nicknamed by colleagues, when they both worked for Scotland Yard.
He had temporarily split from his wife and after the relationship ended, Ms Wortley married.
Angie Robinson, 50, chief executive of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, has been disclosed as the woman with whom Mr Todd had a three-year affair. Her husband, John, 52, is battling bowel cancer at the same time as trying to save his 30-year marriage.

An 'open secret': Michael Todd and Mrs Robinson
Since then, the father-of-three is said to have made advances towards former model Laura Nagulapalli, 41, who was a Pc in Manchester, and journalist Andrea Perry.
A woman officer raised the alarm about Mr Todd after she received a "distressing" text from him.
The officer, who serves in London, was so upset she immediately informed Greater Manchester Police.
Mr Todd's body was found on Tuesday, 300 foot from the summit of Mount Snowdon with a half-empty bottle of gin. It is believed he committed suicide.
Last night, the widow of Michael Todd spoke of her love for the cheating Chief Constable.
Grief-stricken Carolyn Todd paid tribute to her husband as an inquest heard that he had not jumped to his death or taken an overdose during a tormented walk up a mountain on Monday.
"Michael was a caring and loving father and husband," Mrs Todd said in statement. "He was immensely proud of his kids.

"He worked away from home on the second most important thing in his life, his job, returning to us at the weekend and for family holidays. The family recently returned from a holiday in Jamaica.
"I loved Michael very much and the last time I spoke to him he told me he loved me too. We have been married for 27 years and eight months."
Mrs Todd, 47, their daughter Catherine, 16, and twin sons David and Matthew, 13, are being looked after by police colleagues of Mr Todd.
Her statement added: "The whole family is struggling to come to terms with his death."
Family liaison officers are also helping Mrs Robinson, chief executive of Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and her husband.

According to sources, Mr Robinson has advanced bowel cancer and has been in a state of fury since discovering his wife's double life.
Last Thursday, he allegedly drove 70 miles from Congleton to knock on the door of the Todd family home near Newark, Nottinghamshire, and tell Mrs Todd about her husband's relationship with his wife.
A colleague of Mr Robinson at estate agent Whittaker & Biggs said he had not been at work since Monday.
Partner Derek Torr, 66, said: "I saw him at a partners' meeting on Monday evening and he seemed his usual self. But he hasn't been to work since and he isn't answering calls on his mobile."

Estate agent John Robinson, 52, is fighting cancer
Rescuers found him slumped facedown on a snow-covered slope with the bottle by his side on Tuesday evening. Contrary to early reports, no suicide letters had been found.
The inquest opened yesterday and heard that Mr Todd - who has been linked to a string of women including serving police officers - was twice the drink drive limit when he died.
Initial tests also revealed he had not taken an overdose of pills or drugs, or jumped from a cliff.
Although an exact cause of death cannot be ascertained without further tests, the hearing in Anglesey was told his body did show signs of exposure.

Lady in red: Angie Robinson was cheating on her husband with the police chief
A theory being examined is that he stumbled after drinking and froze to death.
Pathologist Anthony Caslin, who carried out the post-mortem examination, was called to give evidence at an early stage to allay suspicions about the way the officer died.
Mr Caslin said: "There is no evidence that this man had fallen from a height or sustained any significant injury."

It is very sad. But I think there's a whole lot more to this than has surfaced yet.

She is certainly not the Mrs Robinson of "The Graduate".

As a senior officer of ACPO rank it truly amazes me that Mr Todd, and his ilk, daily judge junior officers conduct, then behave in this deceptive degenerative lifestyle. It is indicative of a number of ACPO ranks, who have 'affairs' with women officers, act with arrogance when an exposure occurs. Perhaps a serious look at these officers expense accounts would enlighten the public?

I really do believe that these picture of these 'other' women should not be printed as these poor families of all involved don't need all this at this very difficult time.
Even if he did have affairs his death now doesn't need to turn in to a circus for the press.
Rather than writing about his personal life surely the press should be writing about the fantastic job he did and also leave these people alone so that they are able to grieve without all this being dragged up.
- Rebecca, London
What a total coward. As a man he should be able to face up to his responsibilities. How many people fighting terminal illness would love to swap places with him? I wonder if Mr.Robinson fighting his own disease has any respect for a healthy person who takes the easy way out. As a Policeman does he not have a principal of making people stand up for their responsibilities.

Sounds like he couldn't keep it in his trousers to me. A common characteristic of successful men. Condolences to the poor man's family.
- R Allen, Canterbury
Precisely, Nu. Couldn't agree more. None of this belongs in the public domain.
- Kathryn, London
My thoughts are with his family at such a hard time. Although, as Nu in London said; it's not fair to be printing these sorts of "stories." It seems as though people already have 'theories' which can only serve to swing peoples' judgements on his death. I hope for all parties concerned that the truth comes out, I just hope it's done in a dignified way. It seems people are forgetting we are talking about a well-respected police officer and a family man.

Sounds like a truly unfortunate accident to me. One that happened while the man was possibly under some personal pressure. Why else should he have brought a change of clothes, etc? From now every single detail gets pulled out there into the light, photos bigger than life of all and more involved (or not involved), all for the salivating public to see, while there are so many close and loved ones to grieve! Disgusting!

Why shouldn't he have an affair? Our society refuses to shun those who embark upon affairs - we always accept their excuses, plenty of MPs do it - John Major did it, Prince Charles did it, celebrities do it. The press then accepts their excuses, and encourage us to do the same. Most agony columns tell us to do it if it causes no harm.
I feel sorry for his wife and children, but let's not focus on the real victims eh?
- Paul C., Bedfordshire
There have been a lot of reports of "thoughts being with his family". If this man's thoughts had been with his family he would not have found the need to commit suicide.
- Neil, Gloucestershire, England.
My heartfelt Sympathy to Mrs. Carolyn Todd and her three children.
- C. Alexander Brown, Rockcliffe Park, Ontario, Canada
This isn't news. It is wrong to print all of this stuff about his personal life.
- Nu, London
It's all about timing. If his extra marital adventures had come out before he died he'd have been a 'Love Rat Cop'. As it is, he still seems to be hanging on to 'Heroic Top Crime-fighter' status.
- Paul, London
A friend has been working for him at GMP and is devastated and said that no matter what came out in the press he would have weathered the storm, she said he was a true leader, always fighting their corner when they got bad press or morale was low - obviously he got no support in his time of need. Tragic for his family first and for anybody who cared for him, be they lovers or colleagues. I think the Police service has lost one of its potentially brilliant leaders.
- Sandra, London
As far as I recall, fornication with consenting adults is not illegal. It may not be a very good example for others, it may even frighten the horses, but it's not against the law.
However, do we now expect Chief Constables to be setting moral standards by example? If so, we're going to need a whole tranche of new senior cops.
Actually I couldn't care less about how many ladies this officer dallied with - just as long as he was doing a decent job. I'm very sorry for his wife and family whose grief must be compounded by this gossip. In particular I was most impressed by his wife's recent public statement. She's obviously a lady of some courage and real strength of character. I hope things go well for her in the future.

Makes a change from the dull sanctimony of his predecessor, James "God's Cop" Anderton.

People who investigate wrongdoing by governments and "security" services frequently end up dead.
- Neil, London, UK
Sad. However, the issue for me and possibly himself, was that of dishonesty.
- David, Burgess Hill, UK
This is tragic, how awful to take your life just because you fell in love with someone.
- Andy, Winchester
On Seattle's radio am1090 today, it was broadcast that the Chief Constable had once worked on investigating CIA Rendition flights through Britain, stopping there to refuel. Just a thought!
- Ray Betteridge, Seattle Washington USA
Extra marital affairs are rife amongst top Police Officers.
A serious debate is needed regarding the conduct of senior Police officers who are putting themselves and the public at risk from blackmail.
- D.S. Phil Carter, Sussex Police FIB
Never mind all that, I want to know who the well known business woman is.
- Alex, Leeds
I feel sad for the loved ones, family and friends, which he has left behind to mourn his death. We all have weaknesses for the opposite sex, it is what we do within these weaknesses which makes or breaks us. Let this be a lesson to all of those who have, or are carrying on in a similar manner. Either an involved person or your guilt will get you in the end!
- Jewel Thief, maidstone uk
Who knows? but should really be for his family, friends and colleagues to get to terms with not pseudo-psychologists to pontificate over.
- Bookerblood, widnes england
If all of this is true, I have more sympathy with the hoards of devastated loved ones he has left behind, especially his wife.
- Wendy K, London
A great loss to our society. He must have been very troubled by what is apparently, if the newspapers are to be believed, a weakness for the opposite sex outside of his marriage. Embarrassing, but not worth taking your own life for, even in his senior position. I would imagine even a senior psychiatrist would find this perplexing.
- Chris, Torquay, UK
I feel sorry for his widow and children.
In addition to the loss of a husband and a father, they have to face the stories in the media of his series of affairs and the alleged existence of an illegitimate child.
- Steve, Swansea, UK
Met him a few times. Good bloke with great personality. Difficult to understand things like this.
- Michael, Swindon, Wilts
It is such a pity and a sad day for all of us who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
- Harsha Thaker, London, UK
Tragic story. Makes you think deeply about what true 'achievement in life' really is.
- Paul, London, UK
R.I.P. One of the few proper Chief Constables whose tenacious but compassionate nature will see him receive the condolences of friends on both sides of the law.
- Robert , Hull, East Yorks
Clearly there is a problem somewhere: either his personal or professional life. Let us hope the true reasons for this become known, for someone else clearly is involved and should be brought forward to face scrutiny.
- Trunk, London, UK
Is there an investigation in to the actual cause of death? The fact that Constable Todd was investigating the CIA makes me shudder.
- Cou, Austin tx usa
Was it really worth this man taking his own life so that we could have had a few laughs at his downfall one Sunday morning. Shame on us all.
- Tf, London, UK
Extremely sad loss for his family, colleagues and for the police service. I met Mr Todd just once and he was extremely warm and personable. If only more chief constables were like him the police service would be better.
- Paul, Bury, Lancashire
How terribly sad. The public sometimes forget what a stressful and difficult job Britain's Police Officers do.
- Amelia, Cheshire, England
A charming and intelligent man, you were one of our brightest hopes.
- Mghb, Kent, UK
Sad story, he sounds a like a decent hard working man, and a good copper. I am sure he will be sadly missed.
- Brian, Wiltshire
How sad - such a lovely man too. May God rest his soul.
- Mary, Ramsgate Kent
How very very sad. My heart goes out to Mr Todds family. He was an Officer who deserved the utmost respect, both from his colleagues and the general public - he will be sadly missed by everyone. He brought the Police to the public - he made them approachable, he was very fair to everyone. God Bless you Mr Todd, may you rest in peace.
- Sadie Quinlan, Cardiff
He was such a charming man and a dedicated police officer. This is enormously sad news. His poor family.
